2009 was a year of unprecedented challenge and change for the City of Lenexa. Like most communities across the country, the city saw significant budget shortfalls due to the economic recession. Lenexa also experienced changes in leadership both on the Governing Body as well as city staff.
But with challenge and change comes new opportunity. City leaders worked with the community through tough decisions, finding solutions to the budget crisis and putting the city on firmer foundation as the world continues to pull out of the recession. New leaders emerged both on the Governing Body and city staff. Emphasis was placed on sustainability and taking care of our existing city assets, such as streets, parks and facilities. Carefully thought-out investments were made for projects to address citizens’ current needs and to put the community in a stronger position for the future. Several city departments were restructured, and new innovations were introduced to improve service, communication and efficiency.
